Cabinet des Sens: A Sensory Ode to Beauty by Becha

Machas Artist Becha brings her layered visual practice, rooted in collage and material experimentation, to artisan perfumery brand Metropoliten with Cabinet des Sens, an advent calendar conceived as an art object produced in ten numbered pieces.

Conceived as a multisensory journey, the work brings together scent, touch and visual storytelling within a meticulously handcrafted box. “The project draws inspiration from the classical elegance of cameo carving and the serene beauty of Aphrodite’s sculpted profile—the goddess of beauty as a timeless muse,” explains Becha. “Elements of classical engraved drawings are subtly woven into the design language, evoking craftsmanship and heritage,” reflecting Metropoliten’s commitment to artisanal excellence.

Crafted by Becha in collaboration with Mina Miladinovic from studio Koko Daš, the box is constructed using a carefully curated range of paper textures, enhancing its tactile presence and material depth. Behind each small door unfolds a daily olfactory chapter, inviting the recipient to experience scent as narrative. The final reveal, intended for 25 December, is concealed within a secret drawer that emerges when the ‘eye’—a lid that sits on top of the box when open—is gently lifted, a gesture that symbolically awakens the senses.

With Cabinet des Sens, Becha reimagines the advent calendar: “Through the harmony of material, form and concept, Cabinet des Sens bridges classical art and contemporary artisan craft,” says Becha. “It takes shape as an intimate art object, where material, image and fragrance are held in deliberate balance, inviting a slow, attentive engagement with scent and art as a sensorial and narrative experience.”
