Hélène Builly

collage, illustration

Hélène Builly is a French mixed media artist based in Paris. Her artworks project a very sophisticated and elegant aesthetic, where compositions almost appear as realistic as photographs but without compromising the distinctiveness of the collage technique.

“Collage is first and foremost an irresistible desire to change the order of things, then a way of understanding the theatre of life. An image carries a whole story with it, and when it is inserted in a new context, it creates new meanings. However, the subconscious does not completely forget the original significance, and it creates new imaginary solutions. Chance is then a great source of creation in collage: it reminds how important it is to create with flexibility because if collage is a binding exercise, the constraint is weaker when the cut-out element is inserted in a new context; it somehow regains control of itself.”

Hélène collects in her Paris studio a vast selection of photographs from different époques and, depending on specific needs, she also shoots photos herself to achieve the composition she envisions.
