Social Spaces: Jonathan Calugi for Haworth

Jonathan Calugi has been busy exploring the spaces where furniture and line drawing combine. In his recent collaboration with Haworth and Apartamento Studios, Jonathan brought a sense of eye-catching movement to the US furniture giant’s showroom at NeoCon 2019, the world’s leading trade show for the commercial design.

Within Haworth’s ‘social spaces’ themed booth, which was focused on inspiring workplaces where people « gather, connect and refresh », Jonathan fused illustration with photography, showing his exuberant one-line characters nattering, working and relaxing. Jonathan’s longtime collaborator Simone Brillarelli then created continuous animated loops from the illustrations, which were projected on transparent vinyl windows.

“The inspiration behind the artworks is everyday life,” Jonathan shares, “and seeing how people use furniture. Design-wise, it was important to keep in mind the environment where those animations were going to be displayed and, considering how busy a tradeshow can be, I wanted to channel a sense of ease and comfort.”

The resulting artworks evoke a casual and amiable atmosphere, fitting the modern vibe of Haworth’s social spaces to a tee and will also be used for promotion on Haworth’s digital platforms, including their website and social media. As for Jonathan’s verdict on the project — ‘I am super happy with the result!’
