Jonathan Calugi x Il Sole 24 Ore: Understanding Credit Cards

Pre-paid cards, debit cards. gift cards, Pay Pal cards, contact less cards and voucher cards. There are endless alternatives to cash - and choosing the right one can help each individual and entire families to save cash, not just annually, but every month. In some cases it could mean the difference between ending up in debt or keeping afloat.

Il Sole 24 Ore is the Italian leading financial newspaper and has a quite distinctive visual signature: when the Creative Director contacted Machas to collaborate on two illustrations to represent the intricate world of credit card we knew it was going to be a good project.  The illustrations were commissioned for the to most successful editorial feature of the publication and Jonathan Calugi was the man for the job as his pop artwork could really make an impression and represent in fresh way such a sensitive subject.

For the cover Jonathan represented a credit card as it is being passed on during a transaction; the interesting twist is that the card is made up by many of the items that can be bought with the card itself. For the second illustration Jonathan inverted the concept and an item, in this case a suitcase, is made up by all the type of cards that can actually buy the item itself. “I took inspiration from the shape of the card and work with the block concept”, say Jonathan, “actually the block concept works almost as cupboard compartments—it came natural to fill them with things!”

The newspaper is out today, enjoy it!
