Game On: Ray Oranges for Apple

There are thousands of games in the App Store, which begs the question: which ones to download? To help their users discover the best games out there, Apple runs an App Store feature called ‘5 New Games We Love,’ which spotlights the week’s newest and most noteworthy apps. Looking for vibrant images to go alongside the feature, Apple wanted to collaborate with an artist to create striking illustrations that would level up their weekly series.

With his creative use of lines and shapes, his vibrant color palette and geometric style, Ray Oranges’ work was a great fit for the gaming theme. Apple commissioned him to create a series of illustrations that subtly integrated the number ‘5’ into their composition.

Ray was challenged to illustrate four genres of games - adventure, sports, platform and puzzle games - and create a more general gaming illustration. Each of the illustrations were declined in three colour variations.

“The world of video games is full of ideas and references. Each type of game has a pivotal point for inspiration” explains Ray. “The main challenge was to include the number 5 into each illustration, and make sure it was immediately readable. I don’t deny that I had a good number of sketches before getting to the final illustrations!”

Ray’s final images burst with electric energy. The dynamic illustrations are now featured on the App Stores worldwide - mission complete!
