Defined by the New York Times as “the Ultimate collision between Commerce and Art”, K11 brings its successful concept to mainland China launching the new K11 Shanghai retail complex.

Built around the three pillars of K11’s shopping experience, Art, People and Nature, the mall’s creative team developed a cohesive and compelling visual experience for their visitors. Machas’ own Becha was the chosen artist to create the key visual for the opening and we caught up with independent Creative Director Baris Gencel who worked on the K11 Shanghai’s opening to go behind the scenes of the developing process.

M: Hi Baris, which were the requirements of the client for this specific artwork?
BC: The client wasn’t too strict with the requirements: they wanted something unusual that couldn’t be exclusively identifiable as high fashion - but would include high fashion elements in an art inspired setting. In the initial phase I presented various visuals to narrow down what style or mood they liked the most. In the following step I shared with them several ideas and we cut it down to 3 options. The winning concept mixed the ideas of carnival atmosphere and celebration with BECHA’s surrealism and the Cirque De Soleil visuals as feeling, Alegria, Joy. Later on the also included core visual element of K11 which was Horse.  It was a bit like working on puzzle but result is Spiritually moving, visually daring and emotionally stirring.

M: How was working with Becha?
BC: I first saw her illustrations in a magazine and I loved her color palettes and illustration. The whole image had to have a dreamy, mysterious feel - Becha was the perfect match.

M: you were at the opening event: which were your impressions? was the artwork well received?
BC: The event was definitely something special, with plenty of surprises and with always something to wow the visitors; the quality, service and attention to details was really good. The people I talked to showed a lot of appreciation for Becha’s artwork as it was really unique and different as the tones, colors, elements, everything was referencing the event. As a proof the the arwork developed resonated with the the visitor, most of the them confessed me they’ve kept the invitation cards as memory.”
