Jonathan Calugi knows how to strike a chord! Berlin-based jazz collective Jazzanova recently commissioned him to design the visuals for their latest studio release, The Pool.

Jonathan’s concept for Jazzanova’s first full record in ten years was to create “a world within a word,” an intricate web of cityscapes and interconnected bodies that spells out the album title whilst telling many stories simultaneously. The multiplicity of Jonathan’s drawing hints at the band’s sophisticated sound, which blends multiple genres like funk, jazz, R&B and soul influences and sees features by Jamie Cullum, Charlotte OC and Ben Westbeech.

Jonathan also teamed up with animator and long-time collaborator Simone Brillarelli to emphasise the musicality of the drawings as the movement creates its distinctive rhythm and tempo.

In addition to the Pool cover, Jonathan also created five individual artworks for the singles that echo the style of the album’s fine interconnected lines but focusing on a simpler composition and the tour merchandise.
