Piece of Mind: Ray Oranges x Inner Piece

Ray Oranges’ artworks often depict evocative cityscapes and have the power to make anyone pause for a moment to contemplate their mysterious, sometimes surreal beauty.

And spreading quiet time in a loud, distracted world, is art puzzle brand Inner Piece’s reason d’etre.  The LA brand fell in love with Ray’s art and penchant for complex architectural composition and challenged him to create the perfect artwork to be turned into a 500-piece of art.

“I used to be a product designer,” says Ray, “and I really enjoy when things come full circle, and see my illustrations take the form of products”.

The design process required Ray to add enough visual variety to help differentiate the pieces of the puzzle beyond their individual shape.
The theme of Inner Piece’s first series of puzzles is the concept of “home”, and Ray opted for a pink colour palette that best evoked his Californian memories.  The artwork is now a 18” x 18” matte coated jigsaw puzzle made with 100% recycled paper that is worth spending time doing and, once finished, hanging on a wall.

“I’ve always loved puzzles,” confesses Ray, “I was obsessed with them when I was a kid, but now I’ve realised I love drawing them even more!”
