Westquay is a shopping centre in Southampton, UK, and host every February its renowned Festival of Light. The event has become paramount in the city’s annual events programme, with people coming from all over to enjoy remarkable lighting installations.

On this occasion, Machas was consulted to bring on a stunning interactive light artwork capable of leaving a lasting impression on the Festival’s visitors, which is diverse and open to all ages.

We presented Affinity, one of Australian studio Amigo & Amigo’s most iconic artwork: a playful interactive multi-sensorial experience, whose interconnected colorful globes and flows of lights are activated by people’s touch - the more the hands on the sensors, the stronger the light flow would spread into the installation.

The result at Westquay was an explosion of colour and light illuminating the shopping center’s Esplanade. The large-scale installation involved a 3.5 metres tall structure, with 400 metres of LED RGB strip lights, 19 Intel Galileo boards, 114 input sensors and 48 connecting arms.

Having previously worked Amigo & Amigo on an ambitious project in Beijing, we knew their playfully smart installations would be a perfect match for the Festival, and Affinity, inspired by the connectivity of the human brain, was a memorable experience.
